TL;DR: The Newest Season of my Game Show is Finally Here! Want to join in the chaos and learn what happens when I force 3 of the coolest Data & AI nerds to play ridiculous games together? Check out the first episode here (and below), and reply to this email if you’d like to participate in a future episode!

A couple of weeks ago, I announced to all of you that my game show was returning after a few months of hiatus, and today, the day has finally come…

BECAUSE THE SUPERPOSITION GAME SHOW IS FINALLY BACK!!!

The show in all its glory 🤣

If you love chaos, memes, and truly obscure nerdery of the finest quality, man, are you gonna love this week’s episode, because I’ve recruited 3 of Canada’s sharpest Data & AI experts (JF Amprimoz, Myriam Jessier, and Allen Turner) to help me kick off the season in style.

And I’m gonna be honest, I legitimately could not stop laughing the entire time I was editing this video. So if you’re interested in learning:

  • Why Robert De Niro, Cher, Aerosmith, Jim Belushi, Superman, and Ellen once teamed up to make the biggest fever dream video game of the 90s

  • How leatherwork can become the most ridiculous money pit of a hobby

  • What your SEO strategy should be if you have the misfortune of sharing a name with a convicted sexual assaulter

You’re gonna want to check this one out:

If you loved this episode as much as I did and you want to be part of the fun, let me know by replying to this email (or sign up here).

I’m currently filming future episodes and would love to have you (and your friends) participate, so let me know if you want to play in a future game show or want to know what goes into it!

A Quick Summary of dbt Summit!

As I’d mentioned in my last newsletter, this past week I had the privilege of attending dbt Summit in Vegas, and what an experience it was!

I mean, just look at those views behind Will, Stephen, Brian, Michael, Claire, and I!

Before I went to it for my 9th conference in 9 months, I kinda expected that it would be the same as any other conference, and now I realize how wrong I was.

One of the things that caught my attention the most during those four days is that, beyond the wealth of expertise in the rooms I was in (of course), you could really tell that this was a community, and not just a random collection of data nerds.

Everyone (from the attendees to the organizing team) was so kind in sharing the many cool projects they’re working on, and so eager to make new friends and share all the ups and downs of what it means to work in the Data & AI industry in all its shapes and varieties, that it really blew my mind how different that felt from most conferences I’ve attended this year.

I connected with people in all types of industries, all levels of experience, and made a ton of new friends, and all of them were people first, rather than jumping straight to selling their latest project or whatever nonsense usually happens at many conferences.

But mostly, importantly, I’m so thankful to have come across sooo many people I’ve previously only met virtually!

Hunter Muse and I on our walk past the Sphere.

As many of you also do, I work primarily online, so despite the fact that I’ve made so many friends and served so many clients since I launched my company, the relationships I built really take a different level of depth once I finally get to meet any of you in person.

So, if we met (either for the first time or reconnecting) this past week in Vegas, thank you so much for the amazing time together.

And if you’re considering whether you should attend dbt Summit, or really any data/AI conference in the coming months, I can’t recommend it enough.

I’ll be attending two events in Austin this upcoming month (Data Weekend and Austin Tech Week), so let me know if you’re also going, and stay tuned for more details for both of those from me as well 👀👀

Should you underprice your projects to win work? Here’s a quick 8-step guide:

Step 1: No.

Step 2: No, but in pink.

Step 3: Yes, except it’s opposite day.

Step 4: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Step 5: No → No → No→ No→ No→ No→ No→ No→ No→ No→ No

Step 6:

Step 7: NO, YOU DUMMY.

Step 8: No (in Spanish, just in case you’re bilingual)

I hope I made myself clear.

I know the meme-y structure might make it seem like I’m joking, but I’m 100% serious when I say: underpricing your work as a consultancy founder is sabotaging your own hard work.

Good clients will pay any price as long as it’s far exceeded by the value your services provide.

Work on your offerings, understand why they matter to your clients, differentiate from every other Data & AI consultant out there, and price accordingly.

The rest is unnecessary tinkering. SO STOP IT.

Do you ever wish you could see the future when it comes to your clients?

Not as hard as it seems, actually

If I could predict what clients need, I’d be the greatest consultant alive. But I can’t.
So I have to get creative, and so do you.

This is mainly because when any of us scope a project, the first thing we struggle to accept is that clients don’t know what they need. It may be a little harsh, but it’s true.

So when you hear “our data sucks” or “we want to use AI” from them, there are two areas you need to be solving for:
1. Precision (to understand exactly what you need to do)
2. Priority (to define how long it’s going to take to show them results)

The problem is that doing a traditional discovery process takes foreverrrrrrrrrrr, and you’re
constantly jumping over minefields with no map, getting a million perspectives, and no real answers.

So this is why I build workshops instead. Because when it’s finally time for your client stakeholders to really defend their insane AI ideas, to stop hiding behind “we want to do everything” syndrome, and build a path to really clean up their data and make it useful, collaboration is the easiest way to make that possible without spending a million years trying to figure out what’s in their heads.

Want to steal this approach, but don’t have the time to build a workshop yourself?

Ask your clients two questions:

  1. Why is this solution going to be valuable?

  2. What is the biggest problem we absolutely need to fix?

If they can’t answer both clearly, you don’t need to refine your scope. You need to get creative!

Otherwise, I’d suggest investing in a really nice crystal ball.

(And if neither works, I happen to know a pretty creative guy, so let me know! 😉)

The Meme Team: Just Don’t Look at Your Schedule

If you ever find yourself going to as many conferences as I have this year (9 in 9 months so far), you’ll notice that while it is very fun to attend all these events, there are also several very unfortunate side effects.

As a big introvert, the usual one is I typically need like 4 days post-conference to feel like a normal human again, but the biggest one by far is the mess that is my calendar the first week back from the event.

Because I try to dedicate as much of my time and focus to actively participating, I tend to push all my sales calls, client meetings, and marketing efforts to the next week.

So when the last day of the conference arrives, all those deferrals will finally hit me like:

me, dissociating, as I think of the nightmare that is my calendar next week

Don’t be like me. Plan your schedule accordingly, and maybe you don’t have to suffer through back-to-back-to-back-to-back meetings for days on end after you return 😭😭😭😭
